Graduate student Brian Hahn voluntarily took over the wire scanner optics for some days before the semester started Wednesday 01-18-06. Unlike Joe Katich he managed to assemble a two lense tube system quasi on the fly using large diameter lenses for a higher light collection. Savety distance bettween optics and wire is ~5mm.
The attached image is the first good picture of a (here 20um) wire where you
actually can see the light reflection. Earlier attemps by Joe gave only a fuzzy shadow of the wire; a light source was placed below the wire (unrealistic setup for wire scanner operation).
Brian noticed that illuminating the wire for getting a better contrast is spoild by the automatic brightness+contract adjustment of the CCD camera. This CCD "feature" is build-in and we can not control it manually.
