W&M  report 07-15-2004

0) Visited UVA again 07-02-2004 (Klaus Grimm, Robert Marchitelli)

Vladimir and his student Ray demonstrated the art of wire stringing.
In addition a good chance to introduce our (3) summer students into the
world of drift chambers and the involved work awaiting us ...

1) Clean room status

Made some progress to convert the detector lab alias junk room into a neat clean room.

Well, since nobody at W&M responded to my requests to relocate the ancient photolab equipment
(supposedly high quality), some neat Hodoscopes or to dispose some unknown chemicals,
all will be buried forever in the photolab (photolab.jpg) which could have been a nice storage room.

Next step will be to paint the concrete wall with some kind of sealing paint.
The laser stands are assembled, the laser table (4'x10') will be moved from the laser room
to the detector lab next week.
Got a quote from CRI for a softwall clean room (~16 k$), the quote from Liberty Industry
is still pending (even after several requests).

2) Summer students projects

Robert Marchitelli:     MAD chip checkout, CCD camera wire scanner
                                 - have to implement a SMD work space from scratch ($$$)
(SMD (de)soldering station, SMD kits etc).
                                    Purchase list almost complete

Carissa Capuano:       Drift time/drift space correlation (Garfield)
                                 - at present the Garfield data are beeing analysed with Maple, but it lacks of
fitting data with x,y errors. Have to switch to ROOT  next week when
Joe tells me the secret root password of our new Linux computer after he
                                    returns from his vacation ...

Joe Katich:                Qweak adaptation of the Hall A tracking code (Jens-Ole Hansen)
                                 - he is digging through the Hall-A VDC tracking  but got more confused with each line of code ...
So Joe and I have to meet Ole next week so he can explain the underlying physics
                                  of the tracking algorithm.

3) Implementation of an Region 3 electronic logbook for W&M

see http://dilbert.physics.wm.edu/elog/?gexp=all

4) Region 3 implemetation into Qweak Geant

  ... is not forgotten
