W&M report 02-27-2004: very short ...
1) Detector Lab (al)location
The drift chambers will be build at W&M, therefore we have
to establish a detector lab.
At present the W&M detector lab is located on the 2nd floor.
Reminder: single VDC (1 of
4): ~ 104"x38"x6" (full size)

Biggest concern so far:
- Can the DC be transported into/out of the Lab without limitations of
doors, windows and the elevator
?!
-> at preseent a DC mockup frame is beeing
build (W&M workshop):

- Possible installation of a granite table:
So far only one company found: www.tru-stone.com
,
commercial standard (over)size: 144"x 48" x ~14" , ~4630 Kg !!!
-> 3 grades of flatness: B= +-25.4um, A= +- 12.7um and AA= +- 6.35um
->
exceeds elevator size and load, must be lifted through window
-> needs mockup as well
->
have to check/verify floor load
-> where to place inserts, holes , slots
etc in the table ?
==> Maybe we have to switch detector
labs (basement <-> 2nd floor)
BTW: Granite table allows to verify the flatness variation of the
G10 frames holding
the wire plane or HV plane (part of quality control).
How to check for flatness:
Laser -> small Al block -> Photodiode. The block will shadow
partially the laser light (e.g. 50% for calib. height)
Movin the block along the frame give intensity variation caused by
height variation.
Sucessfully execised for BarBar Straw Tube aligmnet on a flat
platform.
- Installation of a Clean Roon
-> dusty Lab
- dust from
ceiling tiles (~rock wool mats ?), to be removed
- dust
distributed by the antiquated and instable AC house system: to be
bypassed + additional AC
-> we need only a softwall clean room with
a10,000
dust level (2nd worst level, only 2 filters)
-> www.clean-rooms.org
(CRI used by JLab inside the EEL clean room)
- Installation of a Faraday cage ?!
(W&M radio broadcast)
-> checked with
analoge/digital osci : no significant noise pickup detected yet ...
- Possible Detector Lab
arrangement (2nd floor)
Blue: Electronic Racks
Dark Green: Lab tables
Violet: ACs
Dark yellow : drift chamber frame (small board size of 104" x 22"
shown here)

2) Garfield
Simulation update
CERN
Garfield binary runs on Redhat Enterprise Linux V3 ES !!!
- no limitations to RH 7.2 and/or wmg0.jlab.org anymore
- we will buy a fast PC next week (disentangles G0 DB usage and
Qweak simulation on wmg0)
Still problems to compile the source on RH 7.2 and RH 9.0, have not
tried RH Enterprise yet.
Garfield program:
- produce "white noise" ToF (partical success with
4000 events, not really randon: tof_4000.ps)
- Change DC cell definition (wire spacing, cell
height)
- Generate Lookup table for ToF correction
(ToF->Position)
- include wire sagging due to gravitation (wire
tention and wire orienation, field/gain distortion)
Progress in Garfield is slow but steadily
increasing
3) MOU Draft and timetable
...
timetable will be presented at the Qweak meeting
